804 is a high-quality, well-graded crushed limestone aggregate consisting of a carefully balanced mixture of larger stone particles and finer material. It is primarily used as a compacted sub-base and foundation material for roads, driveways, yards, paths, hardstanding areas and a wide range of construction projects.

Unlike clean stone, 804 contains both coarse aggregate and fine particles. When the material is spread, levelled, moisture-conditioned where necessary and properly compacted, the finer particles fill the voids between the larger stones. This allows the material to interlock and form a dense, firm and stable layer, providing an excellent foundation for subsequent construction or surfacing.

What is 804 used for?

804 is one of the most versatile general-purpose aggregates used in civil engineering, construction, agricultural and landscaping works. Typical applications include:

  • Road construction – commonly used to form compacted sub-base layers beneath road surfacing.

  • Driveways and entrances – provides a strong, stable foundation beneath asphalt, tarmac, concrete or decorative stone.

  • Farm roadways and farmyards – suitable for constructing and maintaining agricultural access roads, entrances and hardstanding areas.

  • Building foundations and site preparation – used to create a stable working platform and compacted formation for various construction activities.

  • Car parks and commercial yards – provides a durable sub-base capable of supporting regular vehicle traffic when appropriately designed and compacted.

  • Paths and access tracks – suitable for pedestrian paths, temporary access routes and general site roads.

  • Concrete preparation – may be used as a compacted sub-base beneath concrete floors, yards and slabs where appropriate to the project specification.

  • Hardstanding areas – ideal for creating stable areas for vehicles, machinery, storage and general site use.

  • Backfilling and general construction – can be used for suitable filling and make-up works where a compactable graded aggregate is required.

Why use 804?

The combination of coarse stone and fines gives 804 its principal advantage: excellent compaction. Once correctly installed and compacted, the material binds together to produce a dense and stable surface capable of distributing loads into the underlying ground.

It is particularly useful where a project requires:

  • Good compaction and stability

  • A strong load-bearing sub-base

  • An even foundation for subsequent surfacing

  • Reliable material for roads and trafficked areas

  • A durable general-purpose construction aggregate

  • An economical foundation beneath higher-value surface materials

Installation

For best results, 804 should generally be placed on a suitably prepared formation, spread evenly and compacted in appropriate layers using suitable compaction equipment. The required depth and method of installation will depend on ground conditions, expected traffic/loading and the final surface being constructed.

Where 804 is being incorporated into engineered roads, buildings or other specified construction works, the material and installation should comply with the requirements of the relevant project specification.

Material appearance

As a crushed limestone product, 804 typically has a grey to light-grey appearance and contains a visible mixture of angular stone and finer crushed material. The exact appearance, moisture content and particle distribution can vary naturally as it is a quarried aggregate.
